To apply for assistance, you must be a resident of Olive Township in St. Joseph County. If you’d like to get a jumpstart on the process, print out the PDFs below. The top one is the link to the application that is required. Below the application is a checklist of items that we will need you to bring in with your application so we can make copies for our files.
There are also a couple helpful tools towards the bottom that you can print. A list of assistant resources for St. Joseph County might have some valuable information. A budget form is also towards the bottom of this page to help you see at a glance where you stand with your income vs bills. Township assistance is for emergency use only. If you fill out the budget form and find that each month you will be short of funds, look over your bills to see where you can save, or where you might need to request assistance from an additional agency.
Once you turn in your application and all of the items on the checklist, the trustee has 72 hours to review your case and give you a decision. You will be given a form (TA-1A) which explains if the assistance is approved or denied. This form can be appealed and the directions to do so are on the backside. Whether you are approved or denied, you will receive the form and can take that to other agencies so they know you’ve contacted the Trustee’s office first.
When assistance is approved, payment is directly sent to the company, such as NIPSCO. Monies are never distributed directly to the applicant.Checklist-items-needed
